Mount St Benedict

History

Mount St. Benedict was founded in 1912 by a small group of monks from the Abbey of San Sebastian in Brazil. Led by Abbot Dam Mayeul de Caigny, these men sought refuge in Trinidad after fleeing the threat of religious persecution. Here the monks quickly set to work, building the
new monastery high in the hills of Tunapuna. They dedicated the site to Our Blessed Mother under the title, Our Lady of Exile.

The community grew rapidly, and within five years, Mount St. Benedict had become an accepted centre of Catholic life and worship in Trinidad. By 1950, the monks had established the Abbey, started a seminary, and began a boarding school for boys.

Today much of the same spirit drives the monks. Mount St. Benedict has made a commitment to root itself in the land it calls home. Our work has always flowed out of a basic desire to serve the people and their needs.
